Adobe Illustrator，簡稱「Ai」，是Adobe系統公司推出的基於向量的圖形製作軟件。最初是1986年為蘋果公司麥金塔電腦設計開發的，1987年1月發布，在此之前它只是Adobe內部的字型開發和PostScript編輯軟件。
軟件特點
[編輯]最大特徵在於貝茲曲線的使用，使得操作簡單功能強大的向量繪圖成為可能。現在它還整合文書處理、上色等功能，不僅在插圖製作，在印刷製品（如廣告傳單、小冊子）設計製作方面也廣泛使用，事實上已經成為桌面出版（DTP）業界的預設標準。它的主要競爭對手是Macromedia Freehand；但是在2005年4月18日，Macromedia被Adobe公司收購。
所謂的貝茲曲線方法，在這個軟件中就是通過「鋼筆工具」設定「錨點」和「方向線」實現的。一般用戶在一開始使用的時候都感到不太習慣，並需要一定練習；但是一旦掌握以後能夠隨心所欲繪製出各種線條，並直觀可靠。
它同時作為創意軟體套裝Adobe Creative Cloud的重要組成部分，與兄弟軟件——點陣圖圖形處理軟體Photoshop有類似的介面，並能共用一些外掛程式和功能，實現無縫連接。同時它也可以將檔案輸出為Adobe Animate格式。因此，可以通過Illustrator讓Adobe公司的產品與Adobe Animate連接。
早期發布
[編輯]Illustrator的發布，從很多角度來看，都是一種賭博。Macintosh並沒很大的市場分額，而能輸出Illustrator檔案的唯一一種印表機是蘋果的LaserWriter（同樣是新款而高貴）；而且對於主流用戶來說，使用貝茲曲線繪圖也是非常新鮮的；再加上當時Macintosh只能在9英寸顯示器上顯示黑白圖形，所以很多選項都被限制了。不過Illustrator加速了Macintosh大型顯示器的開發速度。
雖然在開始學習鋼筆工具的時候需要一定時間，但是Illustrator的可實現性和強大功能吸引了眾多用戶，並成功超越了MacDraw等軟件，並填補了普通繪圖和CAD程式的空白。
Adobe將Illustrator文件轉換為PostScript檔案，因此當用戶要列印的時候，用戶就直接將文件送到PostScript印表機，而不是從Illustrator列印。由於PostScript是一可讀的文字形式，第三方開發者可以很容易地為整合Illustrator文件編寫程式。
1.1–3版本
[編輯]Illustrator 1.0很快就被1.1版本取代，並得到廣泛使用。1.1版本一個有趣的特徵是包含一張錄影帶，內容是Adobe創始人約翰·沃爾諾克對軟件特徵的宣傳。之後的一個版本稱為88版，因為發行時間是1988年。之後推出的3.0版本注重加強了文字排版功能，包括「沿曲線排列文字」功能。也就在這時，Aldus公司開發了Mac系統版本的FreeHand，擁有更簡易的曲線功能和更複雜介面，帶有漸變填充功能。之後FreeHand與Illustrator, PageMaker和QuarkXPress成為桌面出版商必備的「四大件」。而對於Illustrator，用戶意見最大的「真混合漸變填充」功能直到多年以後的Illustrator 5中才得以實現。
Adobe在用戶介面方面一直勇於創新。它不模仿其他Mac系統軟件的做法，而是設置了豐富的快速鍵組合方式實現了各種導航工具的快速切換。不過，現在Mac OS和Windows平台的快速鍵方式並不完全相同。
2–5版本
[編輯]雖然一開始僅為麥金塔系統使用，但是Illustrator支援其他平台。1990年代早期，Adobe發布了Illustrator的NeXT、Silicon Graphics IRIX、和Sun公司的Solaris系統平台的版本；但是由於市場反應不好，沒有繼續下去。Illustrator的第一個視窗系統版本是1989年初發布的2.0版，但很不成功。之後的一個視窗版本4.0被廣泛批評與Illustrator 1.1過於相似，而和Mac系統用的3.0版卻不搭界。因此在視窗系統上，無法超越CorelDraw。
注意：2.0和4.0版本只有視窗系統版本，在4.0版中Illustrator第一次支援預覽模式，而Mac用戶只有等到1993年的5.0版才有這個功能。
6–7版本
[編輯]Illustrator 6在1996年發布時，在路徑編輯上作了一些改變，主要是為了和Photoshop統一，但導致一些用戶的不滿，一直拒絕升級。Illustrator同時也開始支援TrueType字型，從而引發了PostScript Type 1和TrueType之間的「字型大戰」。和Photoshop一樣，Illustrator也開始支援外掛程式，使得功能得到了極大的擴充。
在1997年發布的7.0版本終於使麥金塔和視窗兩個平台實現了相同功能，設計師們開始向Illustrator靠攏。Corel的其他問題頗多（比如WordPerfect與微軟的競爭），他們把CorelDraw放到消費者市場，讓非專業人士使用。1996年末，Corel發布Mac平台的CorelDraw 6.0反響很小。Aldus公司發布的視窗版FreeHand也不敵Illustrator。1994年Adobe收購了Aldus公司及其旗下的PageMaker軟件，作為交換它把FreeHand賣給了Macromedia。
7.0版本的新功能有「變形面板」、「對齊面板」、「形狀工具」等等。
8-10版本
[編輯]隨着互聯網絡的發展，Illustrator加強了對網絡出版的支援，增加了柵格化預覽、PDF和SVG支援。
8.0版本的新功能有「動態混合」、「筆刷」、「漸變網絡」等等。這個版本執行穩定，時隔多年的今日仍有廣大用戶使用。
9.0版本的新功能有「透明效果」、「儲存Web格式」、「外觀」等。但是實際使用中透明功能卻經常帶來麻煩，導致很多用戶仍使用版本8而不升級。
10.0版本也是Mac OS 9上能執行的最高版本。主要新功能有「封套」（envelope）、「符號」（Symbol）、「切片」等功能。切片功能的增加，使得可以將圖形分割成小GIF、JEPG檔案，明顯是出於網絡圖像的支援。
品牌
[編輯]從1.0版本開始，Adobe選擇波提切利的名畫《維納斯的誕生》中維納斯的頭像作為Illustrator的品牌形象，寄託了開發人員將這個產品給電子出版界帶來新的文藝復興的願望。當初的市場企劃人員發現這個頭像也非常適合展現Illustrator的平滑曲線表現功能。多年以來，雖然每個版本中頭像都有細微變化，但是一直儲存至10.0版本。
CS–CS 6版本
[編輯]被納入Creative Suite套裝後不用數字編號，而改稱CS版本，並同時擁有Mac OS X和Microsoft Windows作業系統兩個版本。維納斯的頭像從Illustrator CS（實質版本號11.0）被更新為一朵藝術化的花朵，增加創意軟件的自然效果。CS版本新增功能有新的文字引擎（對OpenType的支援）、「3D效果」等等。
Illustrator的CS2版（即12.0）。主要新增功能有「動態描摹」、「動態上色」、「控制面板」和自訂工作空間等等，在介面上和Photoshop等得到了統一。動態描摹可以將點陣圖圖像轉化為向量圖型，動態上色可以讓用戶更靈活的給複雜對象區域上色。
對於Mac用戶來說，Mac平台版本都是針對PowerPC編寫的，所以使用新英特爾麥金塔用戶需要呼叫Rosetta進行編碼轉換，導致執行速度大大減慢。
CS3於2007年3月27日發布，4月發售。Mac平台版本是通用二進制版本。 [2]
這個版本的新功能包括：
- 動態顏色（Live Color），提供根據配色理論建立的配色組合，動態的作用於所選擇的物件，並可以一次改變整個作品的色調。
- emapping控制可以從一個圖像中重建顏色數量。
- 與Flash的整合，使用命名的符號和動態文字
- 增強的繪圖工具和控制
- 更快的執行速度
- 橡皮擦工具：能作用於向量物體
- 裁切區域工具
- 改進的獨立模式：可以編輯隱藏的物體和組[3]
CS6版本為Adobe Illustrator的第十六個版本，除了新增許多功能之外，還包括了Bug的修正。
