METTL3全称为甲基转移酶样蛋白3（methyltransferase like 3），又称N6-腺苷甲基转移酶复合体催化亚基（N6-adenosine-methyltransferase complex catalytic subunit），在人类基因组中由14号染色体上的METTL3基因编码。此蛋白为N6-腺苷甲基转移酶复合体中具甲基转移酶活性的组成蛋白，由580个氨基酸组成，大小为70kDa，包含一锌指结构域与一甲基转移酶结构域，可将S-腺苷甲硫氨酸（SAM）上的甲基转移到mRNA中的腺苷（A）上，将其甲基化成N6-甲基腺苷（m⁶A）。METTL3与另一蛋白METTL14共同组成N6-腺苷甲基转移酶复合体的核心，但METTL14在此复合体中仅有与RNA结合和稳定结构的功能，无催化甲基化的功能。METTL3的基因表达异常与多种癌症有关，许多案例中METTL3为致癌基因，在许多癌症中表现量增加。
