名为“吉普赛玫瑰”（Gypsy Rose）的1964年雪佛兰Impala被认为是史上最具代表性的Lowrider之一[1]，Jesse Valadez（英语：Jesse Valadez）作品，彼得森汽车博物馆藏[2]

Lowrider或Low rider是指一种将车身降低的改装车，于美国、墨西哥自二战后的20世纪40年代至50年代兴起[3]，后成为奇卡诺文化之一。此类车辆多加装液压装置，透过操作开关调整悬吊，降低或升高车身。

Lowrider为奇卡诺文化之一，一词在当中除指车辆本身，也包含与驾驶人们参与汽车俱乐部聚会、“兜风”（Cruise（英语：Cruising_(driving)））的行为[3][4][5][6]。这类车辆在此文化中被视为艺术品，车体多以各式漆料构成的复杂图案覆盖，并以特制的配件进行装饰。常安装可调整车高的液压装置，和小于原始尺寸且搭配白壁胎（英语：Whitewall_tire）的辐条车轮[7][8][9]。现也有于国际发展的趋势[3][4]。

此在1958年被加州车辆法规（英语：California Vehicle Code）定为非法，该规定最终遭批评为不必要且对奇卡诺人及广泛拉丁美洲文化带有歧视，终于2023年[8][9]。

起源

其确切发源地可能为美国南加州，另有源自墨西哥蒂华纳、美国德克萨斯州或新墨西哥州的说法[10]。

将车辆降低的改装方式兴起于40年代中后期，并在50年代的年轻墨西哥裔美国人（奇卡诺人）之间蓬勃发展成为流行，透过诸如改用降低高度的悬吊零件（Lowering block）、改造转向轮轴（Spindle（英语：Spindle_(automobile)））、安装更短弹簧等改装方式降低车辆行驶高度。

他们推崇“低而慢”（英语：Low and slow，西班牙语：Bajito y suavecito）的行驶风格，与当时主流如Hot rod（英语：Hot rod）等其他更注重提升速度的改装方式截然相反[10]。

1958年1月1日，加州车辆法规（英语：California Vehicle Code）第24008条规定车辆车身不得低于轮圈底部[11]。

隔年1959年，一位改装技师罗恩·阿吉雷（Ron Aguirre）在此法生效后为了避免在他所处的加州里阿托尔及州内各处不断受警方取缔[8]，在父亲协助之下构思研发了一种绕过此法律的方式，即是装上Pesco生产之航空工业用液压泵浦与阀门，使车辆得以透过开关调整行驶高度[12]。

此改装和聚会、“兜风”的文化在80年代和90年代风靡加州各地，后因多项因素被严格禁止[13]。2009年时一度再次流行，并在2019年美国受冠状病毒影响期间更受关注[14]。

2020年代，反方主张此行为本身无害，规定是基于对墨西哥裔美国人的偏见所致[5]。

2022年，分别在1986年与1988年制定相关法令的圣荷西、沙加缅度因此将其废除[15][13]。

2022年，加州众议院更一致通过一项敦促所有仍颁布相关禁令城市（包含内欣诺市）将其废除的决议[16]。

2023年，加州撤销了最低车身高度的限制和州内地区对“兜风”直接禁止的效力[9][17]。

日本

此文化也传至日本[18][19]。下平淳一（Junichi Shimodaira）创立的Paradise Road专门进口销售与改装包含Lowrider的美制车辆[20]一度吸引制作Hot rod（英语：Hot rod）改装车的知名人物Ed Roth（英语：Ed Roth）目光[21]。自此文化在2001年于日本出现至今，据统计仍有约200个与此相关的汽车俱乐部依旧活耀[22]。

流行文化

1975年，乐团“War（英语：War_(band)）”的歌曲《Low Rider（英语：Low Rider）》于告示牌百大单曲榜登上第七名[23]，让此文化受到瞩目。

1990年代，此类车辆与西岸嘻哈和G-Funk（英语：G-Funk）文化紧密联系。Eazy-E、Mack 10（英语：Mack 10）、Ice Cube、Dr. Dre、Snoop Dogg、The Game、Warren G（英语：Warren G）、South Central Cartel（英语：South Central Cartel）、Above the Law（英语：Above the Law (group)）甚至约翰·希南（于歌曲《Right Now》音乐录影带中）等艺人与团体都在所发行作品的音乐录影带中加入此类车辆[24]。
