格爾德·法爾廷斯[3]（德語：Gerd Faltings，發音：[ɡɛʁt ˈfaltɪŋs] ⓘ；1954年7月28日—），出生於蓋爾森基興，德國數學家，研究領域為算術幾何。[4][5]他因證明了莫德爾猜想，而於1986年獲得菲爾茲獎，[6][7]並因「在算術幾何中引入強有力的方法，解決了長期未決的莫德爾與蘭的丟番圖猜想」於2026年獲得阿貝爾獎。[8]
教育
[編輯]1972年至1978年期間，法爾廷斯在明斯特大學攻讀了數學和物理。期間雖然因服15個月的義務兵役而中斷學業，但仍於1978年取得數學哲學博士學位。[5][9][10]
學術
[編輯]1981年，法爾廷斯在明斯特大學獲得了數學學科特許任教資格。期間，他還擔任了明斯特大學的助理教授。1982年至1984年間，他在伍珀塔爾大學擔任教授。[11]
1985年至1994年，法爾廷斯來到普林斯頓大學擔任教授，並在1988年秋季和1992至1993學年成為普林斯頓高等研究院的訪問學者。[12]
1986年，他因證明了泰特猜想、沙法列維奇猜想和莫德爾猜想在國際數學家大會上獲得菲爾茲獎。[13][14]
法爾廷斯曾正式擔任過十多名學生的導師，其中包括望月新一和維斯拉瓦·尼祖爾。[1][2]
