飞机于美国东部时间晚上 10 点 12 分从蒙特利尔特鲁多国际机场起飞，延误了大约两个小时，目的地是纽约市的拉瓜迪亚机场。[5][6]

晚上11点18分，美联航2384号班机，一架飞往芝加哥的波音737 MAX 8型客机（註冊編號：N17300）在拉瓜迪亚機場起飞时，以99节的速度中止起飞，机组人员在机舱内闻到异味后进入紧急状态。[7]机场消防车和舷梯救援车被派往现场救援。 [7]机场消防车由纽约和新泽西港务局警察局的飞机救援和消防操作。

晚上11点37分，空管允许1号救援车在D滑行道横穿4号跑道，当时加拿大航空快运公司的飞机正在4号跑道的最后进近阶段。但在几秒钟前，管制员刚刚允许救援车横穿跑道，而最终导致了事故的发生，随后可以听到管制员多次命令救援车停车。[8][9][10]媒体后来公布的空中交通管制录音显示，碰撞发生后不久，一名管制员在频率上说“我搞砸了”。[11]
